Position Summary
Lotic Environmental Ltd is an environmental consulting firm based in Cranbrook, BC that is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Aquatic/Fish Biologist to join our team. Lotic Environmental provides quality environmental consulting and research services for clients from industry, government, and private sectors. We provide services in a variety of specialized areas, including fish and aquatic biology, movement ecology, aquatic habitat assessment, water quality monitoring, and GIS analysis. The Senior Biologist oversees and participates in all aspects of project implementation under the guidance and direction of a Project Manager. The Senior Biologist will be responsible for working with various teams in the field to collect data according to scientific methodology and best practices, manage the data collected, perform quality assurance and quality control checks, and analyze fish and fish habitat data. The successful candidate will be required to understand and adhere to requirements associated with permits and regulatory approvals and carry out work in accordance with high standards of safety. Further, this role provides the opportunity to present results in the form of technical reports, memorandums, and/or presentations. Communication and leadership skills are an essential part of this position as this position requires working closely with clients, regulators, and the Lotic team to ensure project timelines and deliverables are met. The successful candidate will also be expected to provide supervision, training, and mentoring of junior and technical staff.
Field work for this position is primarily situated in the East Kootenays, focused around Cranbrook/Kimberley and the Elk Valley. Therefore, applicants will be required to live within this region. This position will require both office and field work, with seasonal variations to accommodate project needs. Work will require travel to field sites, sometimes remote, and sometimes for extended periods of time. The work required can be physically demanding, and the successful candidate must be comfortable working outdoors in all seasons.
The key requirements for this position are listed below.
Education and Experience Requirements:
· Minimum Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree from a biology, environmental sciences, or other applicable university program.
· Registered or eligibility for registration as a Professional Biologist (RPBio) with the College of Applied Biologists.
· Minimum five years of relevant experience in the field of aquatic or fish biology and/or environmental sciences.
· Experience leading staff in project or field settings.
· Strong technical writing, reporting, and communication skills.
· Excellent data management skills and proficiency with data analyses in R.
· Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driver's abstract.
Preference may be given to applicants with the following:
· Master’s degree in the field of biological sciences, fisheries, resource management or a related program.
· Experience with aquatic field work (sampling fish and fish habitat, fish handling and tagging, sampling water quality, sampling invertebrate communities, etc.).
· Experience applying for permits and regulatory approvals.
· Experience with Geographic Information Systems software.
· Basic First Aid (previously Occupational First Aid Level 1).
· Electrofishing Crew Supervisor Certificate.
· Swift Water Rescue training.
Compensation & Benefits:
· Year-round position (hours may be limited on a seasonal basis).
· We offer a competitive annual salary, starting at $80,000 - $90,000, based on a standard full time (40-hour) work week, with compensation dependent upon skills and experience.
· Employees are paid as per BC Employment Standards for overtime.
· Paid sick days and vacation time.
