Aquatic Biologist Job Posting- closing date 31 January 2023

Lotic Environmental Ltd is an environmental consulting firm based in Cranbrook BC and is seeking an Aquatic/Fish Biologist to join our team. Lotic Environmental provides quality environmental consulting and research services for clients from both private and public sectors. Our staff are well-experienced in many aspects of environmental consulting, from development and implementation of field sampling programs to data analysis and reporting. The team at Lotic Environmental provides a variety of specializations, including fish and aquatic biology, movement ecology, aquatic habitat assessment, water quality and quantity monitoring, hydrological modelling, and GIS analysis. Our team is proud to provide safe, practical, professional consulting services that meet the needs of our clients.


This role is an approximate 30/70 mix of field and office roles and will require travel to field sites, sometimes remote, and sometimes for extended periods of time. Field work can be physical, and the successful candidate must be comfortable working outdoors throughout all seasons. Most of the field work will be local to the Southeast Kootenays, and therefore remote work is not feasible. This position will work under supervision of a Senior Biologist but does require an individual that can take on tasks and progress independently.


The successful candidate must meet the following requirements and will be expected to perform the following job duties:


Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree from a biology, environmental sciences, or other applicable University program. 
  • Registered or Eligibility for registration as a Professional Biologist (RPBio) with the College of Applied Biology (BC). 
  • Minimum two years experience (or a field-research graduate degree) in the field of aquatic or fish biology and/or environmental sciences. 
  • Proficient writing skills and statistical understanding. 
  • Data management and analyses in R. 
  • Class Five drivers’ licence with a clean driving abstract.


Additional Skill (preferred):

  • Graduate degree from an applicable University program. 
  • Experience with aquatic field work (sampling fish and fish habitat, fish handling and tagging, water quality, invertebrate communities etc.). 
  • Experience with word processing, spreadsheets, and Geographic Information Systems software. 
  • Occupational First Aid Level 1. 
  • Electrofishing Crew Supervisor Certificate. 
  • Swift Water Rescue training.


Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and oversee field collection and management of various types of data,
  • Statistical analysis,
  • Prepare written reports to fulfill the specific requirements of an individual project including
  • Technical Memorandums, formal reports, regulatory approval applications, and peer-reviewed
  • journal articles,
  • Provide QA/QC of data collection and analysis,
  • Provide supervision, training, and mentoring of junior and technical staff.

  • Electrofishing Crew Supervisor Certificate
  • Swift Water Rescue training
  • Class Five drivers licence with a clean driving abstract


Responsibilities:

 

  • Prepare proposals, cost-estimates and study designs
  • Conduct and oversee field collection and management of various types of data
  • Statistical analysis
  • Prepare written reports to fulfill the specific requirements of an individual project including Technical Memorandums, formal reports, regulatory approval applications, and potentially peer-reviewed journal articles
  • Provide QA/QC of data collection and analysis, and review deliverables prepared by colleagues
  • Liaise with clients and Government Agencies on behalf of Lotic Environmental
  • Project management (e.g., cost-estimates, project tracking and invoicing)
  • Provide supervision, training and mentoring of junior and technical staff
