Environmental Monitor

Position Summary 

Lotic Environmental Ltd. is an environmental consulting firm based in Cranbrook, BC and is seeking an Environmental Monitor to join our team for a short-term contract tentatively scheduled to start July 1 and ending September 31, 2026 (subject to change). Lotic Environmental specializes in freshwater ecosystems and provides high-level scientific consulting services for clients from industry, government, and private sectors. We are seeking an Environmental Monitor who can collect routine water quality samples, conduct water sampling during specific construction events, monitor for stranded fish, and record and report environmental data. The successful applicant will receive on-the-job training to attain the necessary skills needed to complete the environmental monitoring. 


This position is based out of the Elk Valley, BC. Rented accommodation will be provided by Lotic, and an out-of-town work allowance will be provided for those that meet the applicable distance requirements. This is anticipated to be a full-time position, with scheduling consisting of an 8-on/6-off shift rotation, dependent upon project management needs and the environmental monitor’s cross-shift partner. Shifts will consist of 10-12 hours. 


Responsibilities 

· Monitor onsite contractors to ensure environmental management plans and regulatory permits and approvals are followed.

· Conduct water quality sampling and monitor for fish stranding.

· Transcribe field data into spreadsheets and/or report formats. 

· Work safely and comfortably in remote locations for long periods. 

· Work in a team environment, also independently, and be willing to learn by instruction from lead biologist or technician. 


Qualifications (preferred not mandatory) 

· Environmental monitoring experience.

· Enrolled in or graduated from a post-secondary program with a focus in Environmental Science or Aquatic Biology.

· Registration or eligibility for registration with the College of Applied Biologists, BC.

· Class 5 Drivers License.

· Experience with word processing, spreadsheets and other standard computer software. 

· Basic First Aid (formerly OFA - Level 1)  

· Swift Water Rescue Certificate


Compensation 

· A competitive wage will be provided based on the candidate’s profile.  

· Employees are paid as per BC Employment Standards (overtime is calculated as 1.5x-hourly wage after 8 hours and 2x-hourly wage after 12 hours).
